Material Practice as Research: Digital Design and Fabrication

Spyridon Ampanavos, Sofia Blancos Santos, Raphael Stähelin

The goal of this project was to create a flexible system for a facade which allows fluid changes in porosity, achieving variations in pattern compositions and light control. The project becomes feasible through the implementation of digital fabrication techniques. Mass production and mass customization processes are performed with the use of specialized tools and a robotically controlled machine for slab curvature formation. Through the application of planar forces on slabs of different sizes and thicknesses we obtained a series of varied results of various shapes and forms.
